  1. Please read this entire file before installing and using the program, Tying Flies for Trout.  If you do not, here is a quick tip; clicking once on any image in the program will take you up or down one level to a new layout. Check out the online help by clicking on the “?” icon.

  4. Macintosh Installation:
  5.  
  6. • After you insert the CD-ROM a folder, "FLYCD01" will be open on your desktop, double click on INSTALLER to install "FileMaker Pro User" on your hard disk.
  7.  
  8. • You must have QuickTime in order to view the videos. QuickTime comes standard as part of the Macintosh OS.
  9.  
  10. • For Best performance when using "Tying Flies for Trout", open the FileMaker Pro User folder on your hard disk and drag the "Tying Flies For Trout" icon on to the FileMaker Pro User application icon. This launches FileMaker Pro User from the hard disk rather than the CD-ROM.

  12. • The first time you run the program you may be prompted to find MAINMENU.FM. If you are prompted, use the pull-down menu at the top of the dialogue box to select "Desktop", then double click on FLYCD01, then double click on MAINMENU.FM.

  14. Adding Your Own Comments and Notes to the Patterns Database:

  16. • As CD-ROM is a read-only medium, you will need to copy the PATTERNT.FM file to your hard disk.  This file is about 11 Megabytes and is located in the "MACDATA" folder on the CD-ROM.  (You can not just copy the alias to your hard disk.)  After you have made a copy, always launch by double-clicking on your hard disk copy of PATTERNT.FM, or by dragging it on to the FileMaker Pro User application icon on your hard disk.  You will start off in the patterns section, but can access all portions of Tying Flies for Trout.  Your changes to the patterns notes are saved automatically.

  19. Printing Problems:

  21. Some beta testers have had difficulties switching the layout of their printer from Landscape to Portrait mode.  If your printer can not be switched, we apologize.

  23. Most pages in Tying Flies for Trout look best in Landscape mode, but you can print any page in either mode.  In order to fit a wide page on a printer stuck in Portrait mode you may want to lower the 100% setting on the Reduce Enlarge field in the Print Setup menu.

  25. You may copy any program section over to your hard disk (that is any file with the .FM extension in the MACDATA folder) and run that section by clicking on it.  Running this way, all printing features will work.

  33. Here are more tips from the help section of the program:

  35. Preface    
  36. The Preface section is a very simple part of the program consisting of this one screen.

  38. Use the red scroll bar on the right side of the field view the entire text.
  39.  
  40. Use the “Back” button to go back to the “Strategy” menu.

  43. History    
  44. The History section is identical to the Preface section except that it consists of five screens.

  46. Use the red scroll bar on the right side of the text field to view the entire text.

  48. You can use the Prev & Next buttons to navigate back and forth between the five screens.

  50. Use the “Back” button to go back to the “Strategy” menu.

  53. Entomology Found Set    
  54. This is the first screen where the “Found Set” (or list view) mode is used in the program.

  56. This is one of the most powerful features of the program because it allows you to view multiple records (or screens) at the same time.

  58. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the window to navigate through the records.
  59.  
  60. Click on the text to the left of the associated image to activate the scroll bar for additional text when present.

  62. Simply click once on the postage stamp image next to the associated text for a more detailed view of each image and record.

  64. Entomology Full Screen    
  65. Most sections of this program contain a Full Screen (or detailed) version of each record.

  67. This is where you go when you click out of the “Found Set” or list view.

  69. You can use the Prev & Next buttons to navigate back and forth between the records in Full Screen mode.

  71. Use the Back button to go back to the list view. You can also click on the Full Screen image to go back to the list view (this shortcut also works anywhere else in program, even here in the HELP.FM section).

  73. Patterns Found Set    
  74. This is the “Found Set” (or list view) mode. This view allows you to browse multiple patterns at the same time.

  76. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the window to navigate through the patterns.

  78. Simply click once on the postage stamp image next to the associated text for a more detailed view of the pattern.

  80. Also notice the header text field at the top of the screen. This contains general information about the particular set of patterns you are browsing. Sometimes you will need to click on  this field to refresh the text.

  82. Use the Index button to view an alphabetical list of all the patterns.

  84. The Back button will take you back to the Patterns menu.

  86. Pattern Recipe
  87. This is the Pattern Recipe section.

  89. This is where you go when you click out of the “Found Set” or list view.

  91. You can use the Prev & Next buttons to navigate back and forth between the recipes.

  93. Click once on the image to go to a Full Screen image of the pattern.

You can print the recipe as well by clicking on the Print button. Be sure to choose the landscape option in the page set-up dialog box When printing, note the choices of “Records being browsed” (all those currently visible in Found Set or list view) and “Current Record” (the recipe you are viewing).

  97. Use the Back button to go back to list view.

  99. Pattern Full Screen
  100. This is a Full Screen pattern recipe.

  102. This is where you go when you click on the thumbnail image in the pattern recipe view.

  106. You can print the full screen image as well by clicking on the Print button. Be sure to choose the landscape option in the page set-up dialog box .

  110. Tutorials Found Set    
  111. This is the “Found Set” (or list view) mode of the program.

  113. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the window navigate through video, tools, materials, etc…

  115. Simply click once on the postage stamp image next to the associated text for a more detailed view of that record or to enter the Play Video screen for the Step By Step or Video section.

  117. Click once on the text to the left of the associated image to activate the scroll bar for additional text when present.

  119. The Back button will take you back to the Tutorials menu.

  121. Tutorials Full Screen
  122. This is a Full Screen Tutorial record.

  124. This is where you go when you click on the thumbnail image in list view.

  126. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the text field to read all of the information about the record.

  128. Use the Back button to go back to the list view. You can also click on the Full Screen image to go back to list view.

  130. Tutorials Video Screen
  131. This is the Play Video screen for the Video and Step By Step tutorial sections.

  133. This is where you go when you click on the thumbnail image in list view.

  135. Use the scroll bar on the right side of the text field to read all of the information about the record in the Step By Step section.

Notice the Play Video button, this button selects and plays a QuickTime movie. A control bar will appear once the movie starts. To stop the movie click the play/stop button on the left end of the control bar (Mac users must click twice the first time), you may also click any other button or field to deselect and stop the movie.  You may scroll through the movie using the slider button in the middle of the control bar, forward and reverse controls are at the right end (click once to step through, or hold mouse button down to scan).

  139. In Step By Step you may stop the movie at any step and scroll through the text at the left to find the individual step script.  When you start the movie again both text and video will return to the beginning.

  141. Use the Back button to go back to the pattern recipe. You may also click on the Full Screen image to go back to pattern recipe.

  143. A to Z Index
  144. The A to Z index is another version of the browse view which lists all of the patterns in alphabetical order.

  146. Click the pattern of interest to view the recipe screen.

  148. Note that this view lists the entire pattern collection and therefore loses the previous found set.
